Port A awarded HEB grant. Jan 9, 2012

SHAC submitted a grant to HEB on behalf of our school district, and Port Aransas was one of the 12 schools chosen!  We are thrilled to accept the $15,000 Healthy Campus Award.  It will fund efforts to support the three pillars of health;  FOOD, BODY, and LIFE.  We plan to enhance our nutrition education, access to healthy foods,  and plan family fun fitness activities this year. $5000 will be distributed for three years beginning this month.

H‐E‐B Announces 2012 Excellence in Education “Healthy Campus” Grant
Recipients
A dozen campuses to receive $180,000 in grants

(SAN ANTONIO) — H‐E‐B today announced 12 recipients of its $15,000 “Healthy Campus” grants, part of the grocery
chain’s Excellence in Education Awards program.
For 10 years, H‐E‐B has rewarded teachers, principals, superintendents and campuses for outstanding leadership and
teaching through Excellence in Education. Last year,
H‐E‐B added a new category to recognize campuses that place a high priority on health and wellness.
In 2011, H‐E‐B’s “Fit Campus” award gave $10,000 to 10 campuses that went above and beyond to educate children,
parents and staff members about nutrition and fitness.
This year, H‐E‐B chose 12 deserving campuses to receive a “Healthy Campus” grant, a three‐year, $15,000 grant used to
enhance existing health and fitness programs or to add new ones.
These schools showed a robust plan for actively promoting H‐E‐B’s three pillars of health — food, body and life.
Examples include improving school lunch offerings, weaving nutrition into the curriculum, incorporating physical activity
throughout the school day and implementing a health risk assessment for children.
Recipients were selected by a panel of fitness and nutrition experts from The Oliver Foundation, ACTIVE Life, the Texas
Education Agency, the Texas Department of State Health Services, and the Texas Association for Health, Physical
Education, Recreation and Dance.
